摘要: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses that in the absence of lenses, illuminating devices and automatic controls, a field-emission microscope, is less an apparatus more direct aid to eye brain. Perhaps for this reason, field emission microscopy made possible observation adsorption, desorption, diffusion phenomena on atomically clean, single crystal metal surfaces. The foundation field-electron was established with discovery electron current could be measured between two room-temperature electrodes high vacuum whenever critical electric strength them. It found logarithm current, striking anode, depended linearly reciprocal cathode potential. A sharply pointed produced same as dull tip, but at lower voltage. suggested process upon generated tip surface. also applications includes surface diffusion, sputtering, nucleation, sources, electrical breakdown vacuum, molecular imaging, single-atom imaging.
