Evaluating the effectiveness of a family empowerment program on family function and pulmonary function of children with asthma: A randomized control trial

摘要: Abstract Background Empowerment can be an effective strategy for changing individual's health behaviours. However, how to empower whole families manage their children's asthma is a challenge that requires innovative nursing intervention based on family-centred care. Aims To evaluate the effectiveness of family empowerment program function and pulmonary children with compared those receiving traditional self-management only. Design A randomized control trial. Methods Sixty-five were recruited from one clinic in medical centre Taiwan. After random assignment, 34 experimental group received consisting four counselling dialogues child its family. We empowered caregiver's ability child's problems through finding family, discovery discussion about way solve problems, enabling family's cooperation management. The other 31 care clinics. Parental Stress Index Family Environment Scale caregivers, function, signs collected at pre-test, 3-month post-test, one-year follow-up. utilized linear mixed model SPSS (18.0) analyze effects between groups, across time, interaction time. Results decreased parental stress ( F =13.993, p =19.848, =26.483, =7.381, =.001) than comparison group; however, no significant change forced expiratory volume first second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) was found two groups. Sleep did not show changes but cough, wheezing, dyspnoea significantly reduced by observations. Conclusion listening, dialogues, reflection, taking action Freire's theory. Nurses could initiate families' life assist themselves, which yield positive outcomes.
