摘要: Search for a biogeochemical archive of past sulfur pollution is motivated by the need to predict ecosystem health. Sofar, no indicator local-scale S has existed, while long-range transport can already be studied using polar ice records. One in temperate climate zones could annual growth rings trees. However, concentration patterns tree most species have been unknown because negligible accumulation wood. We modified wet chemistry procedure increase recovery from rings, and report time series concentrations six trees an acidified, spruce die-back affected area Central Europe. Beech despite 4 times lower atmospheric inputs, exhibited twice higher wood than spruce. The period peak industrial 1980s did not result enhanced either species. Physiological processes rather abundance regulate storage rings.
