Using improved tree canopy data to advance ecosystems service urban cooling model

摘要: While the National Land cover data (NLCD) is available nationally, its spatial resolution (30 meters) and ability to represent green infrastructure are inadequate for modeling many of the Urban Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) models such as urban cooling and pollination models. In this study, we 1) supplement the 30-meter NLCD and 2) calibrate NASA 30 m tree canopy with high-resolution (1-or 2-meter) tree canopy data derived from satellite imagery and/or lidar data to improve estimates of tree canopy, grass, and/or impervious surfaces percentages. We use two approaches—one with lidar and one without—to generate high-accuracy tree canopy data.
