摘要: 2.1 BackgroundThe term ‘conservation translocation’unites a suite of interventions involving the movement of plants, animals, and fungi for conservation benefit. However, a myriad of starting points, motivations, technical constraints, and biological and socio-economic risks can be experienced by translocation practitioners. The IUCN Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations (IUCN, 2013; hereafter referred to as the IUCN Guidelines) were greatly expanded compared to the previous version for good reason: the variety of issues to consider and the expectation for rigorous planning and monitoring have grown in parallel with the diversity of focal species and number of attempted translocations. The IUCN Guidelines present the key points in undertaking a translocation, from considering other conservation options to developing best practice in monitoring. This chapter aims to be the bridge between the IUCN Guidelines and the content presented in the remainder of this volume, and makes the role of the conservation practitioner explicit in this process. The material does not have to be followed in the sequence presented in this chapter, but we recommend that it is read carefully in its entirety. Practitioners should then choose the most relevant sections from the remainder of the book to read in full before planning and undertaking a translocation.
