摘要: Irrigated farming in Central Asia faces numerous challenges: On the one hand, grave problems inherited from the past that cumulate in the so-called Aral Sea Dilemma have to be remedied. On the other hand, responses must be found to the aggravating supply-demand discrepancy that has to be expected to come from climate change and the intensified competition for water resources in the catchment of the Aral Sea. In cooperation with UNESCO, the Center for Development Research (ZEF) of Bonn University is implementing the Project „Economically and ecologically oriented restructuring of land-and water uses in the Region of Khorezm, Uzbekistan “. Khorezm is a province on the lower course of the River Amu Darya with 265,000 ha of irrigated farmland. The project aims at bundling technical, institutional, and socio-economic measures into trans-disciplinary concepts to make the utilization of land and water resources more efficient. The findings of the analyses of the water-management system in Khorezm made so far and the derived restructuring measures are summarized in this paper.
