摘要: ObjectivesTo determine the clinical and nutritional efficacy of pre/probiotic (Synbiotic2000 Forte™) enhanced Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for the treatment of Severe Acute Child Malnutrition (SAM).MethodsRandomised, double blind, placebo controlled efficacy study. We recruited 792 children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) admitted to MOYO nutrition ward from 12th July 2006–8th March 2007. To maximise study generalizability, all children admitted with SAM were enrolled. After inpatient stabilization with F75milk-based feeds, they were randomised to Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) either containing or not containing a pre/probiotic mixture (Synbiotic2000 Forte™). Probiotic dose was≥ 1x10^ 8 CFU lactic acid bacteria per gram RUTF. Control was standard RUTF without any added synbiotic.
