摘要: Considering the hidden societal toll of pursuing objectives, this chapter and the next illustrate how too many objectives can stifle everything from individual achievement to educational systems and scientific innovation. The main focus of this chapter is the harmful effects of outcomes and objectives upon education. The insights so far bring into question the entire idea of encouraging quality schools, educators, and students through rewarding higher scores on tests. In fact, lower test scores may strangely be as indicative of educational progress as higher ones. The problem is that quantitative test scores give the false comfort of scientific truth without truly paving the way towards greatness. In this way, our blind reliance on objectives exact real costs to society, impacting the success and happiness of our children.
