摘要: BACKROUND: A paradigm shift in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of transient ischemic attack (TIA) over the last decade has resulted from deeper understanding of risks and use of newer tissue-based diagnostic criteria. We evaluated the rates of TIA and ischemic stroke hospitalization per 100,000 population over the past decade in a representative national database. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2000 to 2010 (n=86,622,872) to identify cases of primary TIA (ICD-9 codes 435.0-9 and 326.34) and primary ischemic stroke (ICD-9 codes 434.00-99) discharge diagnoses. RESULTS: The number of TIA hospitalizations in the United States decreased linearly from 101 per 100,000 in the year 2000 to 80 per 100,000 in 2010.
