摘要: This paper investigates the ability of simulated annealing (SA) optimization method to deal with optimal placement of several STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) in a large power system based on their primary function where the optimization are made on two parameters: their location and size of them. The primary function of STATCOM is improving transmission system voltage, there by enhancing the maximum power transfer limit. Also, modal analysis is used to place several STATCOMs in the power system and the obtained results are compared with the results of applied SA technique. Besides this, since by using modal analysis, STATCOMs may not be placed optimally in power system, the study is carried out in two steps when modal analysis is applied. At the first step, by using the modal analysis, the critical area of the power system is identified under the point of view of voltage instability. At the second step once the weak area is identified, the SA technique finds the level of compensation by STATCOMs.
