摘要: Plankton ecology has long been a popular research field, but in spite of the enormous number of studies undertaken in fresh waters, our understanding of the structural and functional aspects of its ecology is far from complete. The general role of planktonic animals and plants in the ecology of aquatic habitats is known and their pop-ulation cycles in natural waters have been studied by many investi-gators (see Hutchinson, l967, for an extended review of older work). Fager (1963) has described the general state of our knowledge with respect: o plankton ecology and Hutchinson (1961) has described many of the special problems of phytoplankton ecology.
