IMPACT OF WIND GENERATION ON EMISSIONS UNDER ALTERNATIVE POWER SYSTEM OPERATION APPROACHES

摘要: Due to concerns regarding global warming and air pollution, there has been an international movement in the promotion of renewable technologies for electricity generation. As wind generation does not itself create any harmful emissions, policy makers often promote it as a means to reduce a country’s national emissions levels. Two alternative system operation approaches with large levels of installed wind generation are explored in this paper. Particular emphasis is placed on the resulting emissions of the conventional plants under both approaches. It is found that in Ireland wind generation can be used as a tool for reducing CO2 emissions but alone it is not effective in curbing SO2 and NOx emissions.
