摘要: Fuel spills in the sub-Antarctic islands are typically accidental and are associated with the distribution and storage of fuel in tanks, drums, bladders or pipelines. The spills tend to occur near research stations. There are currently no universally acknowledged guidelines developed for the assessment or remediation of hydrocarbon contamination in cold regions. Risk assessments and remediation programs are regulated by the individual nations operating within the Antarctic region. This study presented the results obtained from the analysis of risk assessment procedures developed for the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. The procedures were compared with risk-based decisions made at a recent fuel spill in Antarctica.
