Aggression in pigs: origins and solutions.

摘要: In the past, welfare concerns have focussed on the immediate and visible aspects of production systems. In this paper, an alternative approach is presented, which focuses on two different forms of aggressive behaviour (aggression that occurs when pigs are mixed and aggression by the sow towards her piglets) which cause significant welfare and production problems under commercial conditions. An understanding of the environmental and genetic origins of these behaviours can be used to guide and inform strategies aimed at reducing the impact of aggressive behaviour on pig welfare and on the farm business.
