Isolation of Bifidobacteria from infant feces and their antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria

摘要: Bifidobacteria are important constituents of the intestinal microflora of humans and animals. These organisms are the predominant group of bacteria in the normal intestinal flora of healthy breast-fed newborns where they constitute more than 95% of the total population. The objective of this study was to isolate, identify and characterize probiotic organisms from infant feces and determine their activity against common pathogens. Isolated Bifidobacteria were characterized by phenotypic, morphological and biochemical test. Antibacterial activity of these isolates against pathogenic organisms was tested by the agar well diffusion method. Twenty two Bifidobacteria were isolated from feces of breast-fed infants. Among these, six isolates were randomly chosen for further study.
