Conservative estimates put the death toll in Eastern Visayas at 6,000, with economic losses of at least $15 billion. The United Nations designated the disaster a Level 3 emergency, on par with the Syrian conflict. For many weeks after Super Typhoon Haiyan, survivors wandered through the devastation, digging through piles of cadavers for bodies of the missing.
