摘要: The article focuses on important issues related to modern language teaching and learning such as the meaning of communicative competence in a globalizing world, partial linguistic competences, intercomprehension, the relationships between the first and other languages studied at school, etc. It also draws on the authors’ experience in working with secondary school teachers in Bulgarian, English, French, German and Russian towards selecting and applying adequate teaching techniques which facilitate positive transfer of knowledge of and about the system of the first language to the study of a second and a third one. Some highlights from a Round Table discussion on these issues held with language teachers are also presented.
