摘要: Several other highlights of his youth are worth noting, for they heralded the persona of the Joel Kopple we have come to know. As a youth, Joel manifested early the spirit of volunteerism that has characterized him throughout his life. Scouting was the first outlet that provided him with his burning desire to help others. He delved into it with his characteristic intensity, becoming an Eagle Scout within 3 years. Another was his active involvement in Jewish religious organizations. Perhaps it is this which formed the roots of his Talmudic approach and thinking, a feature that was to come to good stead in his later scientific career in considering, sometimes in painful detail, each and every aspect of a question prior to arriving at a conclusion.
