摘要: Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have been in existence since the 1980s, and companies have experienced many problems and challenges implementing these systems. The success rate in implementing an ERP system has improved but is still below 28 percent (EyetoIT 2004). Owing to the low success rate, many organizations are wondering if ERP systems are really worth the trouble and expense. Within organizations, especially those with failed systems, there is tremendous controversy regarding the usefulness of ERP systems. In the 1980s, companies were under pressure to produce new products faster and to reduce costs to compete in a global economy. They felt that an ERP system would solve their problem of gaining and maintaining a strategic and competitive advantage. Companies rushed to implement these systems with the hope they would solve all their problems. Organizations have moved toward acquiring and implementing package software, rather than building a similar application of their own. Companies realized that it was cheaper to purchase an ERP software application, knowing that the cost of development had already been paid by a vendor. When successful, these packaged business software applications allow companies to automate and integrate the majority of their business processes, share common data and practices across the enterprise, and produce and access information in a real-time environment.
