摘要: 11.1 Introduction e ability of stem cells to self-renew and/or differentiate into a variety of specialized cell types underlies their tremendous potential for the treatment and repair from disease or trauma. Noninvasive monitoring of the endogenous fluorescence of these cells can provide a unique insight into the dynamic cellular changes occurring during cell differentiation and formation of specialized tissues. In this chapter, we provide an overview of general approaches to monitor and study stem cell cultures and engineered tissues. We also highlight the particular advantages of noninvasive optical imaging and the speci c roles of NAD (P) H and FAD during stem cell differentiation. We then describe current methods for monitoring stem cell cultures and 3D engineered tissues using nonlinear microscopy.
