摘要: Background: After breast conserving surgery, up to 90% of recurrent cancer occurs within the index quadrant. Hence, we hypothesised that restricting radiation therapy to the index quadrant after removal of the primary tumour might be able to replace whole breast external beam radiotherapy (EBRT).Methods: Using the technique of partial breast irradiation developed at UCL, we launched the international TARGIT A randomized controlled trial in March 2000 comparing TARGIT vs. standard EBRT after breast conserving surgery with local recurrence as the main outcome measure (www. thelancet. com/protocol-reviews/99PRT-47). Research ethics approval in accordance with local research governance regulations was obtained in all participating sites.
