摘要: The stratigraphic successions that contain the uppermost part of the Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) as well as the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (K/Pg) of the southern Pyrenees, have an exceptional geological and paleontological terrestrial record. This record is one of the most complete of Eurasia to study the environmental changes and history of life of this period. Strata are build up by the Arén sandstone formation (coastal), the Salàs marls (prodelta and turbidites), the Grey unit of the Tremp formation (lagoon marls and sandstones), the Lower and Upper red units of the Tremp formation (fluvial) and the Vallcebre limestone and related unita (Lacustrine). All these units are arranged in a general regressive trend during the Masstrichtian. The paleontological content of these stratigraphic units (mainly the grey and lower red units) allows to explore the extinction patterns of the terrestrial flora and fauna of the latest Cretaceous times. The studied sections contain hundreds of fossil dinosaur sites (footprints, bones and eggs) as well as varied record of paleobotany, invertebrate and other vertebrate faunas. A global vision of these events requires an integrated study of geological, paleontological and geochronological data.
