Preliminary screening for lectin activity of some common insects

摘要: Common insects were screened for lectin activity. The different insect samples were homogenized and extracted using Tris buffer saline (TBS) solution pH 7.5. Detection for the presence of lectin was done by hemagglutination assay using different human and animal erythrocytes. Results showed that some household insect pests like cockroach, ants, flies and mosquitoes showed lectin activity. These insect pests can serve as potential source of lectin as shown by the strong agglutinating activity against human and animal erythrocytes
