The appointment of the Representative of the Secretary-General on internally displaced persons in July 1992 and the extension of his mandate by the Commission on Human Rights at its forty-ninth session were significant steps in addressing the human rights dimension of the problem of internal displacement. The Representative's preliminary report to the forty-eighth session of the General Assembly (A/48/579) briefly covered the activities in which the Representative has been engaged since his appointment and those he plans to carry out during the next phase of his mandate. The present report updates the information included therein and outlines in some detail his programme of activities and the progress of its implementation. 2.
