The glocalization of films and the cinema industry

摘要: The world of cinema was pleasantly surprised when the movie Parasite (2019) won four awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay at the 2020 Academy Awards. It was the first time a foreign-language movie had won Best Picture in the 92-year history of the awards. This was a landmark development because it was the culmination of a trend that had been growing for decades: movies addressing themes that resonate with both local (domestic) and global (international) audiences. In addition to its great storytelling and artistic excellence, Parasite highlighted the issue of social class in Korea, as well the pan-human realities of inequality, injustice and struggle for survival.
