Gastroscopy And Biopsy Findings Of Patients With Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer In The Turkey Eastern Anatolia Region

摘要: Objective: Upper gastrointestinal system (GIS) cancers are more frequent in the Eastern Anatolia Turkey. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gastroscopy and biopsy findings.Materials and methods: The gastroscopic and histopathologic findings of the patients with gastroscopically diagnosed GIS cancer in our unit between February-December 2010 were evaluated in this retrospective study. In patients diagnosed with cancer, the localizations and histopathologic characteristics of the lesions were examined taking account of the WHO classification. Results: 215/3980 (5.5%) patients had upper gastrointestinal malignancy. 138/215 (64 percent) of the patients with gastroscopic malignancy were male; their mean±SD age was 63.61±11.74 years (range 31-87). There was total 71 esophageal cancer and 144 gastric cancer. Histology findings of esophageal cancer were: squamous-cell carcinoma was found in 37 (53%) subjects, adenocancer in 6 (9%) and undifferentiated cancer in 4 (5%). The reported gastric biopsy findings were: adenocancer in 69 (48%) patients, squamous cell cancer in 12 (8%), was signet ring cell carcinoma in 3 (2%), 7 (% 5) others. Conclusion: Upper gastrointestinal system cancers are often seen in male subjects, of patients with advanced age, two-fold than esophageal cancers and mostly have been proximal localization. Squamous cell carcinoma and adenocancer are most the often reported esophageal and gastric cancers, respectively.
