摘要: Posttranslational endoproteolysis is essential for the production of biologically active peptides from inactive precursors. Six kexin/substilisin-like endoproteases have been characterized in mammalian species. To understand complex physiological functions each convertase within a cellular context it necessary to comprehensively define its tissue distribution and cohabitation with other members family. Previous studies demonstrated distinct PC1, PC2, furin mRNAs pituitary brain, suggesting unique function enzyme. In present study, mRNA distributions two most recent homologous members, PC5 PACE4, were analyzed rat brain using situ hybridization histochemistry. pituitary, anterior lobe exhibited moderate levels high PACE4 mRNAs. The intermediate showed low expression, while undetectable. transcripts detected throughout cells neural expression pituicytes. was more restricted than PACE4. only neuronal cells, whereas expressed both glial cells. areas that are rich neuropeptides such as cortex, hippocampus, hypothalamus, but or regions, amygdaloid body thalamus, complementary observed. medial habenular cerebellar Purkinje very mRNA. data strongly suggest tissue-specific
