摘要: Abstract Agricultural systems in Canada are extensive area, but not monitored or managed intensively. We developed informatics methods to better anticipate the severity, timing and geography of emerging pest risks crops. The target insects, grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae), present special challenges North America, as well China, because they occur a complex many species, only some which represent significant risk Geographic Information System insect weather data support environmentally sustainable control methods. GIS-based maps outputs simple weather-driven models stage were provided growers through website containing current conditions. combined delivery this information with on-line training non-technical tools for identification selection management actions. Color images over 60 grasshopper species that assist recognition versus non-pest on-line, additional details printed booklets (3500 copies distributed free charge). also an iPhone application provides similar assistance recognizing species. invited attend webinars (75 attendees) in-person workshops (413 participants) instruction on using photographs tips. A post-workshop survey completed by all attendees indicated most (91%) scout their fields check presence grasshoppers, majority farmers (90%) monitor themselves, indicating individual access is valuable feature. Only 18 at had previously used determine status.
