摘要: The avifauna of New Zealand has been severely depleted since human colonisation and currently contains a disproportionately high number threatened species. Of the 23 shorebird species worldwide, six are endemic to Zealand. We review status Zealand's shorebirds examine impact on them various threats, particularly predation by introduced mammals. conservation 10 extant (three oystercatchers, one stilt, four plovers two snipe) is outlined factors that predisposed mammals summarised. Individual accounts presented, including data population trends, known or suspected impacts predation, identification important predator species, other measures in place required. One subspecies extinct, three confined predator-free islands another found only Chatham Islands group. Six survive mainland but have declined varying degrees assigned Collar et al. (1994). Only plover oystercatchers still relatively numerous and/or widespread. Rats, cats mustelids had greatest overall impacts. Conservation mitigate effects predators include formulation recovery plans, control around breeding areas, captive rearing programmes founding new populations translocation. There often substantial differences susceptibility closely related ecologically similar taxa, we stress importance basing management decisions relevant detailed demographic ecological studies. main threat elsewhere world loss degradation habitat; disproportionate mammalian unusual not unique.
