Use of strong opioids for chronic pain in osteoarthritis: an insight into the Latin American reality

摘要: Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of arthritis and one main causes chronic pain. Although opioids are frequently employed for pain treatment, their usage osteoarthritis remains controversial due to associated adverse effects. Most guidelines reserve use refractory in patients with hip knee osteoarthritis. The situation even more complex Latin America, where prevalence insufficient treatment high because limited availability strong opioids. Areas covered: In this article we review epidemiology osteoarthritis, its socioeconomic burden, impact as a pharmacological options, giving emphasis role opioids, safety efficacy, especially American countries, restrictions regulate usage. Expert commentary: Usage safe effective short-term management moderate severe pain, when other treatments inadequate surgery contraindicated, provided adheres existing guidelines.
