摘要: One challenge in understanding the evolution of Internet infrastructure is lack systematic mechanisms for monitoring extent to which allocated IP addresses are actually used. Address utilization has been monitored via actively scanning entire IPv4 address space. We evaluate potential leverage passive network traffic measurements addition or instead active probing. Passive introduce no overhead, do not rely on unfiltered responses probing, and could potentially apply IPv6 as well. investigate two challenges using inference: limited visibility a single observation point; presence spoofed packets that can distort results by implying faked active. propose methodology removing such both darknets live networks, yields comparable inferences made from Our preliminary analysis reveals number promising findings, including novel insight into usage space would expand with additional vantage points.
