摘要: Abstract Study objective To evaluate the efficacy of oral melatonin to induce sedation (natural sleep) while measuring auditory brainstem responses (ABR) in children with suspected hearing loss by calculating ABR success rate use melatonin, percentage whom sleep was induced and time required perform complete testing. Material methods Twenty-nine aged 1 6 years were included this prospective study. testing performed as a day-case procedure single room ensuring suitable sleeping conditions. Five milligrams (or 10 mg over age years) administered orally before electrode positioning. An additional 5 if child failed after 30 minutes. Results 58 ears: both ears 19 (65%), corresponding 38 examinations; only one ear tested 7 (24.2%), could not be 3 (10.3% failure rate). Good quality obtained 17 (59%), brief 4 (14%), who nevertheless remained calm throughout examination 8 (27%) did fall asleep. The mean sleep-onset administration 41 minutes 33 minutes 52 minutes first dose melatonin. A therefore took an average 93 minutes. Conclusion allowed partial or 90% children. This method is effective, but it requires adapted facilities receive child's parents.
