摘要: Background Surgery is entering a new phase with the revolution in genomic technology. Cheap, mass access to next-generation sequencing now allowing analysis of entire human genomes at DNA and RNA level. These data sets are being used increasingly identify molecular differences that underlie common surgical diseases, enable them be stratified for patient benefit. Methods This article reviews recent developments biology colorectal, oesophagogastric breast cancer. Results The review specifically covers genetic predisposition, studies, biomarkers stratification, prognosis treatment, other 'omics technologies such as metabolomics proteomics. Conclusion There unique opportunities over next decade change management disease radically, using these technologies. The directions this may take highlighted, including future advances 100 000 Genomes Project.
