Information technology and productivity changes in the Italian banking industry

摘要: This paper analyzes the effect of information technologies (IT) in financial sector using micro-data on a panel over 600 Italian banks period 1989-2000. We estimate stochastic cost and profit functions allowing for individual banksi?½ displacements from efficient frontier non-neutral technological change. Data IT capital stock enable us to distinguish between movements along shifts owing adoption new technologies. find that both are strongly correlated with accumulation. Banks adopting intensive techniques also more efficient. interpret this last result as evidence catching-up consistent usual pattern diffusion
