Opposition to Pro-Immigrant Public Policy: Symbolic Racism and Group Threat

摘要: This study examines the relationship between symbolic racism and native-born citizens’ policy opinions toward legal undocumented immigration. With data from 1994 General Social Survey NPR/Kaiser Foundation/Kennedy School of Government 2004 Immigration Survey, results logit regression models indicate that significantly predicts opposition to immigration, immigrant access federal aid, standard costs for college, citizenship U.S.-born children, work permits immigrants. The effects are independent group threat other factors. Symbolic explained more variation in government assistance, while immigration levels status. Depending on issue, citizens likely derive their moral ideologies addition intergroup competition.
