摘要: Abstract High circulating levels of carotenoids have been thought to exhibit a protective function in the development atherosclerosis. We investigated whether aortic atherosclerosis was associated with lower major serum α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, lycopene, and zeaxanthin—in subsample elderly population Rotterdam Study. Aortic assessed by presence calcified plaques abdominal aorta. The case-control analysis comprised 108 subjects controls. In an age- sex-adjusted logistic regression model, lycopene inversely risk odds ratio for highest compared lowest quartile 0.55 (95% CI 0.25–1.22; p trend =0.13). Multivariate adjustment did not appreciably alter these results. Stratification smoking status indicated that inverse association between calcification most evident current former smokers (OR=0.35; 95% 0.13–0.94; =0.04). No observed quartiles concentrations zeaxanthin. conclusion, this study provides evidence modest atherosclerosis, being pronounced smokers. Our findings suggest may play role
