Consumers’ perception of farm animal welfare: an Italian and European perspective

摘要: The results of some recent European and Italian surveys on consumer perception farm animal welfare are shown discussed. Special attention is paid to consumers’ opinions about attributes, differences among species (and across countries) in terms perception, “animal-friendly” labels willingness purchasers pay more for food (eggs) deriving from animals raised under higher conditions. From a general standpoint, knowledge varies countries it mainly affected by their economic educational level. Among strong preference given the availability spaces, and, case respondents, also absence movement restrictions (chains or tethers). Laying hens (44%), followed broilers (42%) pigs (28%) categories/species which rearing conditions EU judged need highest improvement welfare. consumers appear less concerned swine (17%) than other Europeans.
