摘要: Through cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of two samples families living in Indianapolis from 1860 to 1880 1900 1920, I test several hypotheses on how adjusted their use three income-generating strategies (wives' employment, children's taking boarders) social, economic demographic milieu as well changing needs opportunities they moved through the family life cycle. The bulk both periods used at least one these some point, relying wives early cycle and/or children later. Relative post-1860 period, after turn century relied more paid work daughters less boarding sons' employment sources income.
