Carbamazepine in the Treatment of Tabetic Lightning Pains

摘要: Seven patients with tabes dorsalis who had severe lightning pains were treated carbamazepine (Tegretol), 400 to 800 mg daily. In all freedom from pain was obtained within 24 72 hours. On discontinuing the treatment recurred, but disappeared one three days when medication reinstituted. The mean observation period 22 months. Two received prolonged (53/4 and 41/2 years) without a wearing off of effect drug. serum concentration in these same as ten control subjects. Observations indicate that are maintained by afferent impulses periphery followed short refractory varying duration. patient local anesthesia painful area blocked this area.
