The 400–500 wolves currently living in the Apennine range of peninsular Italy are slowly recolonizing Alps and expected to move northward. A nationwide management plan for Italian wolf population is being prepared, a zoning system with connecting corridors has been suggested. We developed large-scale probabilistic model distribution as contribution planning process. Thirteen environmental variables related needs human presence were analyzed 12 well-studied territories 100 areas where species absent past 25 years. These two used training set discriminant analysis evaluate potential throughout entire country. Mahalanobis distance statistic an index quality, calculated from average conditions territories. Based on statistics, we constructed actual spatial all Italy. jackknife procedure was assess stability showed good confidence our (coefficient variation ≤ 13%). Distance territories’ centroid quality tested using 287 locations have found dead years consequence action (poison, shotgun, car accidents). useful conservation resulted comparing frequency percentage study area within each class. This how number casualties would greatly decrease protection only minor part indicated usefulness approach evaluation other options, such core corridor identification.
