Distribution and Activity of Attached and Free-Living Suspended Bacteria in the Bay of Fundy

摘要: We investigated the distribution of suspended bacteria in Bay Fundy on cruises spring, summer, and fall 1979; a total 22 stations were sampled throughout at surface, midwater, bottom. Free-living dominated lower all seasons (0.2–4.0 × 106 cells∙mL−1 compared to 0.0–0.5 × 106 attached cells∙mL−1). Attached more important upper reaches with numbers as high 2 × 106 accounting for up 94% bacteria. Both abundance proportion strongly correlated concentration particulate matter. Average cell volume was not significantly different between spring (0.11 μm3, surface water only) summer (0.09 μm3, depths) similar free-living cells.Bacterial activity fall, based uptake [3H]glutamic acid, generally followed same pattern numbers.
