摘要: Background The experiences and perspectives of New Zealanders with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) need to be heard since no research date has been performed. FASD, a neuro-developmental disability life-lasting effects, is irreversible. condition caused by prenatal exposure alcohol. Objectives This study aimed explore understand the daily challenges Zealand individuals FASD. Methods Our sequential mixed methods design used two discrete but compatible qualitative methodologies – transcendental phenomenology in Phase One classic grounded theory Two framed meta-theory pragmatism, which allows use ‘what works’ research. methodology alone would not have answered our question. Using same sample 14 individuals, 37 years, separate data sets were produced sequentially using face-to-face unstructured interviews. Participants had diagnosed either syndrome (FAS) or effects (FAE). Data credibility was checked triangulation. Results Six themes common participants’ emerged: classroom; workplace; coping mental health issues; memory problems; socialization difficulties involvement law authority. Two’s emerging revealed that because participants perceived they under-supported social/health systems, many engaged illegal behaviours (secondary disabilities) experienced employment social problems. Many disavowed having disability, maturity knowing signs symptoms, accepted it. They suggested ways their concerns could resolved. Conclusion In order progress this field can take place, agencies, educational criminal justice systems policy-makers increased awareness complex problems families face.
