摘要: Paul Davis and Gustav Papanek (1984) ranked major economics departments by citations; however, their approach was not novel. Dennis Gerretz Richard McKenzie (1978) initiated the use of citations to rank departments. Though they only southern for years 1976 1977, GerritzMcKenzie used both total mean as ranking criteria. As Davis-Papanek Gerritz-McKenzie have shown, citation-ranking eliminates many problems using journal articles offers a qualitative well quantitative measure faculty productivity. Both studies, Ph.D. granting institutions ignored those which offer master's degree highest awarded. Although Ph.D.granting programs, these tend concentrate on training future academicians treat consolation prize unsuccessful students. While non-Ph.D.-granting may different incentives, teaching loads, computer library support, quality extent graduate research assistantships, we citations-based criterion demonstrate that should be neglected sources economic research.' Column (1) Table 1 shows offering based upon average number 1977-1981 department faculties denoted in 1982 catalogs respective (ties are equally). Our procedure differs from averaged 1978 1981 only. Given wide range size, column (2) denotes citation per member year. found Ph.D.-granting institutions, rankings do change significantly. Four top ten replaced smaller there is considerable shuffling among remaining Since included members citing own work, this bias one advantages instead publications; is, person's stimulating further others. (3) ranks year adjusting self-citations. In some cases correction important. For example, Auburn moves 9th 15th, Brigham Young 5th 13th, West Texas State 12th 6th. general, high correlation between two (the Spearman coefficient .99). Another potential weakness index fact article cited times weighted equally with once each. It would an interesting exercise examine how innovations literature (as measured article) compare middleto lower-ranked programs. Because separate citations, unable make comparison. reason, reported our tables. * Blair Wallace: Department Economics, Clemson University, 222 Sirrin Hall, Clemson, SC 29631; Cottle: University Mississippi.
