Towards an understanding of gender practices in the Pakistani banking sector

摘要: Research gap & Purpose of study: There is lack research on women’s experience and gender inequalities in South Asian countries where issues are discussed less extensively. To fill this gap, study aims to explore gendering work practices identify how women workers make sense these the Pakistani banking sector. Methodology: The embedded social constructionist paradigm adopts a multiple case design. field comprised 49 semi-structured interviews, 6-8 weeks observation each bank organisational documents. Data collected from four studies was analysed using both thematic discourse analyses. Key findings: · institutional norms as well gendered culture, shape sub-texts working interrelation between gender, local cultural creates paradox for bankers, shapes process identity work. While individual level factors contribute towards framing ways themselves their work, institution family socio-economic class have dominant influence. configuration constructed differently wider context different cultural-contexts. Theoretical Contributions: Theoretically, has contributed performativity theory Islamic feminism. Originality uniqueness lies recognising significance ‘institutions’ ‘context’ understanding complexities workplace. Implications practice: recommends policy makers focus changing underlying culture informal which obscure under cloak equality legislations. Limitations: only addressed Pakistan’s sector overlooked heterogeneity experiences regarding occupation, ethnicity geographical location.
