摘要: Objective: To assess the rigor of research methods reported in studies safety or effectiveness contemporary cataract surgery. Design: Formal systematic identification pertinent and critical appraisal each study's methods. Subjects: From 6113 unique, potentially relevant citations that we identified, 90 original published between 1979 1991 addressed visual acuity complications following standard extracapsular extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation, phacoemulsification intracapsular flexible anterior implantation. Main Outcome Measures: Strength study design, performance, reporting 11 methodologic areas assessed a standardized abstraction form by two reviewers masked to authors, their institutions, journal publication. Results reviews were tallied produce an overall quality score (measure methods) for study. Results: The mean (±SD) was 43.1±20.1 out maximum possible 100. Studies received intermediate scores on description baseline ocular disease low descriptions other characteristics enrolled patients, standardization outcome assessment follow-up duration, handling patient attrition. Eighty-three (92%) lacked comparison group. varied publication, did not improve over time, no greater larger vs smaller sample sizes. Conclusions: surgery can be improved if more attention is paid fundamental principles data analysis, reporting.
