摘要: Background In the current study we compared effects of temporal orienting attention based on predictions carried by intrinsic structure events (rhythm) and instructive symbolic cues; tested degree cognitive, strategic control that could be exerted over each type expectation. The experiments whether distinction between exogenous endogenous made in spatial may extend to domain. Task Design Main Results this task, a ball moved across screen discrete steps disappeared temporarily under an occluding band. Participants were required make perceptual discrimination target upon its reappearance. regularity speed (rhythmic cue) or colour (symbolic moving stimulus predict exact time at which would reappear after brief occlusion (valid trials) provide no information (neutral trials). predictive nature rhythmic cues was manipulated factorially symmetrical orthogonal fashion. To test for cues, participants instructed either “attend-to-speed” “attend-to-colour”. Our results indicated both (colour) speeded reaction times independent However, whilst cueing impervious instruction, contingent instruction attend colour. Final Conclusions Taken together, our evidence existence qualitatively separable types attention, akin mechanisms.
