摘要: We conducted a survey questionnaire to assess and compare public perceptions knowledge of jaguars Panthera onca pumas Puma concolor among two stakeholder groups likely come into conflict with these large carnivores: cattle ranchers living near protected areas inhabitants villages located within the multiple-use forest Maya Biosphere Reserve, Guatemala. tested whether group (i.e. rancher or villager) previous experience livestock attacks by carnivores predicted negative perception pumas. The odds people fearing an attack on humans felids recognizing ecological importance species was best explained group. Villagers exhibited more towards than did ranchers. Our results highlight tailoring conservation programmes in high risk needs specific groups. Further research is needed understand which factors settings, socio-economic differences) explain differences vary Programmes that work local predators true risks carnivore along low-cost mitigation measures should be implemented increase level tolerance carnivores.
