Resistance of citrus fruit to attack by the Caribbean fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Loew), was attributed allelopathic essential oils in flavedo region peel. Hatchability eggs laid between peel oil glands significantly greater than that into glands. Mortality occurred principally 1st larval instar, and most larvae died before reaching albedo (the non-oily peel). Grapefruit were more susceptible development oranges, lemons virtually immune successful this fly. Fruit allowed remain on tree until overripe somewhat early-season fruit. resistance correlated with (1) thickness, (2) a high concentration linalool relation limonene oil, (3) absolute amount per unit area Volatile components rather boiling fractions appear account for toxicity. Possible applications these findings are discussed.
