A qualitative study of community pharmacists’ opinions on the provision of osteoporosis disease state management services in Malaysia

摘要: Osteoporosis has significant impact on healthcare costs and quality of life. Amongst the models for collaborative disease state management services published internationally, there is sparse evidence regarding role community pharmacists in provision osteoporosis care. Hence, aim our study was to explore pharmacists’ opinions (including barriers facilitators) scope by Malaysia, informing a vision developing these services. Semi-structured individual interviews focus groups discussions were conducted with from October 2013 July 2014. Three trained researchers interviewed participants. Interviews recorded transcribed verbatim. Data analyzed thematically using an interpretative description approach. Nineteen 1–23 years experience recruited (in depth interviews: n = 9; group discussions: n = 10). These participants reflected their osteoporosis-related enquiries, which included medication counseling, bone density screening referral at-risk patients. Key lack numerous factors: public awareness osteoporosis, accurate tools pharmacists, knowledge medications, time counsel patients about health, collaboration between doctors, support government professional body. The wanted more continuing education campaigns, simple, unbiased material, inter-professional practices reimbursement involvement minimal. Only ad-hoc counseling prevention performed pharmacists. Development trial pharmacy could be facilitated training, remuneration.
