摘要: Abstract Engineering design draws on tens of thousands materials and many hundreds processes to shape, join finish them. One aspect optimized a product or system is that selecting, from this vast menu, the best meet needs design, maximizing its performance minimizing cost. The problem, still incompletely solved, matching material process attributes requirements. Some these can be expressed as numbers, like density thermal conductivity; some are Boolean, such ability recycled; some, resistance corrosion, only ranking (poor, adequate, good, for instance); captured in text images. Achieving match with requirements involves four basic steps. (1) A method translating into specification process. (2) procedure screening out those cannot specification, leaving subset original menu. (3) scheme surviving process, identifying have greatest potential. (4) way searching supporting information about top-ranked candidates, giving much background their strengths, weaknesses, history use future potential possible. In paper we review strategies evolved deal progress has been made challenges remain.
